Sean Smith

Sean Smith, Chairman, joined Keenan in 1989 and served as Chief Executive Officer from 2000 through 2024, succeeding company founder John Keenan. Under Sean’s leadership, the company experienced growth, more than tripling annual revenues and expanding Keenan’s P&C pools to become some of the largest in the country. Sean has over 40 years of operational, technical, and marketing experience in the insurance consulting and brokerage business. He started his career at Prudential Insurance Company, where he developed and negotiated their first preferred provider organization. He then worked as a major accounts manager for Anthem Blue Cross, managing large commercial and school clients.

Throughout his career, Sean has received recognition for philanthropic and industry contributions, including Business Insurance’s “Millennium Heirs to the Industry,” the Los Angeles Business Journal Health Care Leadership award, the Peace Over Violence humanitarian award, and the Los Angeles Team Mentoring “Keystone Award.” As Chairman of Keenan, Sean continues to expand the corporate social responsibility initiative that is integral to the company’s culture, including company-wide service days, middle school mentoring programs, and free programs that promote positive change and safety in schools.
