NUHW Strike Announced

August 16, 2022 by Keenan

Members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), representing approximately 2,000 mental health care professionals working for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California, agreed to an open-ended strike on Monday, August 15th, after negotiations with Kaiser failed to resolve contract differences. Local 39, the union that represents Kaiser’s stationary engineers and clinical technologists, began a sympathy strike the same day. News outlets are reporting that this strike will impact hospitals across Northern California.

Kaiser has indicated that its medical centers and medical offices remain open. Kaiser will directly contact any patient whose appointment is affected by the strike prior to the appointment date to ensure patients receive care.

Kaiser has set up a mental health and wellness service phone line for member issues around behavioral health care and services access.

Members can call 1-800-390-3503 (listed on kp.org) to speak with resolution specialists Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
